White Bass

While not as widely known as other species in the area, white bass can be found in the Altamaha River near Walthourville, Georgia, particularly during their spring spawning runs. These fish migrate upstream from larger bodies of water to spawn in the river's tributaries. The key to success is timing: focus your efforts in late winter or early spring as water temperatures begin to rise. Look for them around rocky shoals, bridge pilings, and areas with current. Small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits are effective lures. Focus on areas where the Altamaha narrows or has some current. While the Altamaha isn't primarily known for white bass, targeting them during their run can provide some exciting action. Be aware that the run can be short-lived, so check local fishing reports for the most up-to-date information. Access via boat ramps along the Altamaha, like the one near Highway 17, is recommended.
