White Bass

White bass enthusiasts looking for a fun day on the water in Oklahoma should consider the area around Eldorado. While there isn't a major reservoir directly in Eldorado, the nearby Red River and its tributaries can provide excellent white bass action, especially during their spring spawning runs. These fish migrate upstream, congregating below dams and in areas with current. Look for them near rocky points and submerged structure. Spring is undoubtedly the prime time, typically March through May, when the whites are actively feeding and spawning. Small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits are all effective lures. A key local tip: Watch for bird activity. Gulls and terns often dive on schools of shad that are being chased by white bass. If you see birds diving, head in that direction! Be aware of changing river conditions; heavy rains can quickly muddy the water and impact fishing.
