White Bass

For some exciting white bass action in West Tennessee, consider a trip to Hornbeak. While Reelfoot Lake is best known for its largemouth bass, the spillway and connecting waters offer a good opportunity to target white bass, especially during their spring spawning runs. These fish migrate upstream from the Mississippi River system. Focus your efforts in the tailwaters below the spillway, using small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits. Early spring, as the water warms, is the prime time. Be aware of strong currents and fluctuating water levels in the spillway area. Bank fishing is possible, but a small boat or kayak will allow you to cover more ground. A local tip: many anglers have success using tandem rigs with two different colored jigs. The white bass here are generally smaller, but they school up in large numbers, providing plenty of action. Always check water conditions and regulations before fishing near the spillway.
