Blue Catfish

If you're hunting for trophy-sized blue catfish in Nebraska, the Missouri River near Bennington is a prime destination. This stretch of the river offers deep channels, abundant structure, and a healthy population of blues. The best time to target these whiskered giants is during the pre-spawn (late spring) and fall months as they actively feed to prepare for winter. Look for blues congregating near submerged timber, channel bends, and deep holes. A key to success here is using fresh cut bait – skipjack herring and gizzard shad are local favorites. For bank access, check out the public areas along Highway 75, but be prepared for some walking to reach the prime spots. Remember to check the Nebraska Game and Parks regulations for size and creel limits, as well as any specific restrictions for the Missouri River. Also, be aware of strong currents and changing river conditions, especially after heavy rains.
