Bluegill

If you're after some classic bluegill action, Lavonia, Georgia, is a fine place to wet a line. The many farm ponds and smaller lakes around Lavonia hold healthy populations of these panfish. Lake Hartwell also provides ample opportunities, particularly in the coves and around submerged structure. Spring, during the spawn, is an exceptional time, as the bluegill move into the shallows to nest. Look for bedding areas in water 2-4 feet deep. Later in the summer, they move to deeper water, often near docks or brush piles. A simple setup with a small hook, bobber, and worm or cricket is usually all you need. Access to Lake Hartwell is readily available at several public boat ramps and parks. A local tip: try using a very small ice fishing jig tipped with a waxworm under a bobber. The bluegill in Hartwell can be a bit finicky, and this presentation often entices even the most reluctant biters. Expect to find a good mix of sizes, with some exceeding 8 inches.
