Brown Trout

East Bethel, Minnesota, isn't widely known as a brown trout destination, but a few select streams offer surprisingly good opportunities. The Rum River, and its tributaries that feed into it, are your best bet. These smaller, lesser-known streams hold pockets of wild and stocked browns. Spring and fall are prime times, as the trout are most active then, especially during and after rain events when water levels rise slightly. Access can be tricky; look for public access points along county roads that cross the streams. Be prepared to wade and bushwhack a bit – these aren't heavily fished areas. The browns here tend to be on the smaller side, but the chance of hooking into a wild fish in a secluded setting makes it worthwhile. A local tip: Pay attention to current seams and undercut banks, as these are prime holding spots. Also, consider using smaller nymphs and dry flies, as the trout can be selective.
