Brown Trout

Barneveld, Wisconsin, might not be the first place that comes to mind for brown trout fishing, but the area's small, spring-fed streams offer a surprisingly good opportunity to target these elusive fish. The streams in the Driftless Area, like those near Barneveld, are known for their cold, clear water, providing ideal habitat for browns. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish for brown trout here. Spring brings mayfly hatches, and fall sees the browns become more aggressive as they prepare for spawning. Access can be a bit challenging as many streams run through private land, so be sure to obtain permission where required. A local tip: Focus on areas with undercut banks, fallen logs, and deeper pools. These provide cover for brown trout. Small spinners, nymphs, and dry flies can all be effective, depending on the time of year and stream conditions. The brown trout in these streams tend to be wild and wary, so stealth is key.
