While Greenville might not be the first place that comes to mind for brown trout fishing, the nearby Embarrass River offers a surprisingly good opportunity. This smaller river system, known locally as the 'Emby,' holds a decent population of wild and stocked brown trout. Spring and fall are your best bets. During the spring, focus on the weeks following stocking for increased chances. In the fall, browns become more active as they prepare to spawn. The river's clear, cold water is ideal for trout, but it can also make them wary. Use a stealthy approach and light tackle. Small spinners, nymphs, and dry flies can all be effective. Public access is available at several bridge crossings and county parks along the river. Be mindful of private property and respect landowners. The brown trout in the Embarrass River are typically in the 10-16 inch range, but larger fish are possible. Consider the river's small size when choosing your tackle; lighter gear is key.
