Brown Trout

Couderay, Wisconsin, might not be the first place that comes to mind for brown trout, but the area holds some surprisingly good opportunities for anglers willing to explore. The smaller, cooler tributaries of the Chippewa River, like the Brunet River, are where you'll find these fish. Spring and fall are the best times to target browns, as they become more active with cooler water temperatures. Focus on areas with deep pools, undercut banks, and woody debris – classic trout holding spots. A local tip: Access to some of these streams can be challenging, often requiring a bit of a hike through the woods. Be prepared for some bushwhacking. Also, the brown trout here can be quite wary, so stealth and natural presentations are key. Consider using smaller nymphs and dry flies on light tippet.
