Brown Trout

If you're looking for a classic Wisconsin brown trout experience, Mellen is a great base of operations. The area is riddled with smaller, pristine streams that feed into the larger Bad River, all holding wild and naturally reproducing brown trout. Spring and fall are prime times, with the pre-spawn and post-spawn periods offering the most aggressive fish. Summer can be productive too, especially with terrestrial insect patterns during the warmer afternoons. For access, try the numerous county road crossings along the Potato River or the upper reaches of the Bad River itself; many offer easy wading access. Be aware that water levels can fluctuate rapidly after rainfall, so check conditions before heading out. The browns here aren't generally giants, averaging 8-12 inches, but their vibrant colors and wild nature more than make up for it. A light action rod and reel spooled with 4-6lb test is ideal, and don't be afraid to experiment with small spinners or spoons in addition to the usual fly patterns.
