Channel Catfish

If you're after whiskered giants, Gordon, Nebraska provides access to some decent channel catfish action. While not a trophy destination, the area's rivers and reservoirs offer ample opportunity to hook into some good-sized cats. The Niobrara River, flowing nearby, is a solid choice, as are some of the smaller reservoirs dotting the landscape. Summer is prime time for channel cats, especially after a good rain when the water is slightly murky. Night fishing can be particularly productive. For bank access, try the public areas along the Niobrara. A simple slip-sinker rig with stinkbait or cut bait is hard to beat. Remember, Nebraska summers can get hot, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen. The channel catfish in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different baits to see what's working best.
