Channel Catfish

Channel catfish are a staple for anglers in Nebraska, and the Comstock area is no exception. The Middle Loup River and its tributaries, along with nearby reservoirs, provide ample opportunities to target these whiskered fish. Channel cats are adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats, from swift-flowing rivers to still reservoirs. Look for them around submerged timber, rocky structures, and deep holes. Fishing is good throughout the warmer months, from spring through fall, with the best bite often occurring at night. Traditional catfish baits like stink bait, nightcrawlers, and cut bait work well. A local tip is to use a slip-sinker rig to keep your bait on the bottom, especially in the river. Sherman Reservoir also holds a healthy population of channel catfish. Focus on fishing near the dam, in coves, and along riprap areas. Remember to check the Nebraska Game and Parks regulations for size and bag limits, and practice catch and release to help maintain a healthy catfish population.
