Channel Catfish

If you're after channel catfish near Swanton, Nebraska, Branched Oak Lake is a great place to start. This lake supports a healthy catfish population, and offers plenty of shoreline access. Summer is prime time for catfish, especially after dark. Set up along the dam, riprap, or near creek channels with bottom rigs baited with nightcrawlers, stinkbaits, or cut bait. The fresher the bait, the better. Early morning can also be productive. A local tip: Check the wind direction and fish on the downwind side of the lake, as this tends to concentrate bait and catfish. Also, be prepared for some big fish, as Branched Oak has produced some impressive channel cats over the years. A sturdy rod and reel are essential.
