Channel Catfish
If you're chasing whiskered giants in southeastern Wyoming, Van Tassell offers some under-the-radar channel catfishing. The Niobrara River, which meanders through this area, is your primary target. While not known for monster cats, the Niobrara holds a healthy population of channel cats in the 2-5 pound range, with the occasional larger fish. Focus on areas with submerged timber, deep holes, and undercut banks. The best time to target these cats is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, with the peak being during their spawning period in June and July. Night fishing can be particularly productive. Access can be tricky, as much of the riverfront is private land. Look for designated public access points or road crossings where you can legally fish. A stealthy approach is key, as the water can be clear at times. Consider using natural baits like cut bait, nightcrawlers, or stinkbaits, fished on a simple Carolina rig or slip-sinker rig.
