Channel Catfish
Thermopolis offers some surprisingly good channel catfish opportunities, primarily in the Bighorn River and Boysen Reservoir. The Bighorn, below Boysen Dam, maintains a relatively consistent flow and temperature, making it productive year-round, though the warmer months (June-September) are generally considered peak season. Look for catfish congregating in deeper holes, near submerged timber, and along outside bends of the river. Boysen Reservoir is also a good bet, especially near the dam and in the back of the Wind River arm. Bank fishing access is available at several points along the Bighorn, including near Hot Springs State Park, but a boat can significantly expand your range. A key local tip: catfish in this area seem to respond well to cut bait, particularly sucker meat or commercially prepared stink baits. The catfish here aren't particularly pressured, so even smaller presentations can be effective.
