Cobia
Chasing cobia off Nags Head can be an incredibly rewarding experience. These powerful fish migrate along the Outer Banks, following schools of baitfish, particularly menhaden. The best time to target them is during the spring and early summer as they move north, and again in the fall as they head south. Focus your efforts around nearshore waters, buoys, and especially around the numerous navigational markers and pilings in the Croatan and Albemarle Sounds. Live eels or menhaden are tough to beat, but bucktail jigs tipped with soft plastics also produce well. Pay close attention to water temperature and clarity; cobia prefer clearer, warmer waters. A local tip: the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center is a great resource for up-to-date intel on cobia migrations and hot spots. Remember to check the regulations, as size and bag limits can change.
