Sheepshead

Sheepshead, those convict-striped bandits, are a challenging but rewarding target in the waters of Nags Head. These fish are notorious for their subtle bites and preference for structure. Look for them around docks, pilings, bridges, and rock jetties. They are present year-round, but the warmer months, especially spring and fall, are typically the most productive. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice for most sheepshead anglers in this area. Present your bait close to the structure and be ready to set the hook at the slightest tap. A short, stout rod and heavy line are essential for pulling these fish away from the barnacle-covered structures they inhabit. A popular access point is the Little Bridge on the south end of the Outer Banks, where you can fish from the pier or launch a kayak. Sheepshead in the Nags Head area can reach impressive sizes, so be prepared for a good fight. Remember to check the local fishing regulations for size and bag limits.
