Flathead Catfish

If you're after flathead catfish in the Alvin area, the Brazos River is your primary target. These whiskered giants lurk in the deep holes, around submerged logs, and under cut banks. The best time to target them is from late spring through early fall, when the water is warm and they're actively feeding. Live bait is key – think large sunfish or bullheads. Fish them on a Carolina rig or a three-way rig near the bottom. A helpful hint for the Brazos: be prepared for heavy current, especially after rains, so bring plenty of weight to keep your bait in the strike zone. Flatheads in this stretch of the Brazos can reach impressive sizes, with some exceeding 50 pounds. Be sure to check the Texas Parks and Wildlife regulations for size and bag limits.
