If you're after trophy flathead catfish, West Tawakoni, Texas, and nearby Lake Tawakoni should be on your radar. This lake is known for producing some truly massive flatheads, thanks to its abundant forage and diverse structure. Anglers often target these behemoths around submerged timber, creek channels, and riprap along the dam. Live bait is king here – think large sunfish or perch. Spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are ideal for flathead activity. A local tip: many anglers have success drifting along the old Sabine River channel that runs through the lake. Be prepared for a battle; these fish are strong! Access is readily available at several public boat ramps around the lake, but be mindful of wind conditions, as Tawakoni can get choppy.
