Flounder

Islandia, New York, offers some decent Flounder fishing, primarily in the Great South Bay. While the population isn't what it once was, patient anglers can still find success. The best time to target Flounder is during the spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) when water temperatures are cooler. They tend to congregate on sandy or muddy bottoms near channels and inlets. A classic Flounder rig consists of a spreader bar with two hooks baited with sandworms or clams. Drifting slowly or anchoring in areas with known Flounder habitat is a productive technique. A local tip: adding a small colored bead or spinner blade above your hook can attract more attention. Public access to the Great South Bay is available at various town parks, but a small boat or kayak will allow you to explore more productive areas. Flounder fishing in the area requires patience and persistence, but the reward of a fresh Flounder dinner makes it worthwhile.
