Flounder

Targeting flounder in the waters surrounding Port Washington requires a patient approach and a keen understanding of their habits. These bottom-dwelling fish thrive in the muddy and sandy flats of Manhasset Bay and nearby harbors. Spring and fall are the prime seasons, when water temperatures are moderate. Focus your efforts on areas with subtle current changes and look for depressions on the bottom where flounder tend to congregate. A local tip: use a chum pot filled with clam or mussel shells to attract flounder to your fishing area. Also, be mindful of the tides. Flounder often feed more actively during slack tide when the current is minimal. The flounder population in this area consists mainly of summer flounder (fluke) and winter flounder, each with slightly different preferences in terms of habitat and bait.
