For flounder enthusiasts, Port Bolivar offers fantastic opportunities, particularly in the fall during the annual flounder run. These flatfish migrate from the bays to the Gulf to spawn, making them abundant in the channels and passes. Focus your attention on the Galveston Bay complex, especially near the entrance to the Gulf. Drifting with live shrimp or mud minnows on a Carolina rig is a proven method. Another tactic is to slowly retrieve a soft plastic lure along the bottom. A local's secret: try gigging for flounder at night around the lighted piers and docks in the bay – it's a highly effective and popular method. Always check the tide charts; flounder tend to be more active during moving tides. Be aware of the oyster beds and shallow areas when navigating the bay.
