King Mackerel
King Mackerel, or Kingfish, are a popular target for anglers fishing the waters around Amelia Island. These speedy predators are most abundant during the warmer months, typically from spring through fall. Look for them around nearshore reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures, where they ambush baitfish. Trolling with live bait, such as menhaden or blue runners, is a highly effective method. Using a stinger rig is crucial, as King Mackerel are notorious for short-striking. For shore-bound anglers, the Nassau Sound Fishing Bridge can be a productive spot to target Kings with live bait or lures. Keep an eye out for birds diving, as this often indicates schools of baitfish and feeding King Mackerel. The King Mackerel population off Amelia Island is known for its impressive size, with many fish exceeding 30 pounds.
