Largemouth Bass

Cheboygan, Michigan, is a fantastic base for targeting largemouth bass in Northern Michigan's diverse freshwater systems. Black Lake, a large inland lake northeast of town, is a noted producer of quality largemouth. The Cheboygan River itself also holds populations of largemouth, especially in the slower-moving sections and backwaters. Summer is prime time, as the bass are actively feeding and guarding fry. Target shallow, weedy areas with spinnerbaits, frogs, or Texas-rigged worms. As the water cools in the fall, switch to crankbaits and jigs around deeper structure. A key to success here is understanding the seasonal movements of the fish. In the spring, they'll be shallow for spawning, then move to deeper weed lines as the water warms. Look for lily pads and other emergent vegetation in the warmer months. Public access is available at various points along the Cheboygan River and Black Lake, including boat launches and shoreline access. Be mindful of the potential for heavy boat traffic on Black Lake during peak season.
