Largemouth Bass

Largemouth bass fishing near Munising, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, offers a unique experience compared to southern fisheries. Forget sprawling, shallow weedy lakes. Here, you'll find largemouth holding in the stained waters of smaller inland lakes and back bays of Lake Superior. The season kicks off later here, typically peaking in June and July after the water warms up. Look for largemouth around docks, fallen timber, and weed edges – any structure that provides cover in these often clear waters. A local tip: many smaller lakes accessible off M-28 hold overlooked populations of largemouth. Because of the shorter growing season, the largemouth here tend to be stockier and more aggressive than their southern counterparts. Topwater lures and spinnerbaits can be extremely effective, especially during the early morning and evening hours. Be prepared for cooler water temperatures, even in summer, and dress accordingly.
