Largemouth Bass

If you're chasing largemouth bass in central New Jersey, don't overlook the waters near Wrightstown. While the area might be better known for its military base, it's also home to several ponds and lakes that hold healthy populations of largemouth. These relatively shallow, weedy waters are ideal habitat for bass. Spring is prime time, as the bass move shallow to spawn. Throwing spinnerbaits, crankbaits, or soft plastics around vegetation can be highly effective. Summer can be good too, especially early morning or late evening when the bass are more active. In the fall, as the water cools, focus on deeper areas with structure. Many of these lakes have public access points, but boat ramps can be limited, so a kayak or small boat might be your best bet. Be aware of the local weed growth, as it can be thick in the summer. The bass in this area tend to average 2-4 pounds, with the occasional larger fish. Check local regulations regarding size and creel limits before you go.
