Northern Pike

Looking to tangle with some northern pike near Algonquin, Illinois? The Fox River and its connected lakes offer excellent opportunities. Pike fishing really heats up in the spring, right after ice-out, as these predators become very active in the warming waters and move into shallow bays and backwaters to spawn. Fall is another prime time, as they aggressively feed before winter. Try targeting areas with weed beds, fallen timber, and current breaks. Anglers find success using large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits. Don't be afraid to use large live or dead baitfish either. A local tip: the Chain O' Lakes, easily accessible from Algonquin, are known for their healthy pike population, but be prepared for heavy boat traffic, especially on weekends. Be sure to check local regulations regarding size and possession limits, as they can change frequently. The Fox River pike are known to be aggressive fighters, so be prepared for a battle!
