Northern Pike

Looking to tangle with Northern Pike in central Illinois? Bement offers some surprisingly good opportunities in the local freshwater. While not known for trophy-sized pike, the area's numerous small lakes, ponds, and drainage ditches connected to the Sangamon River can hold decent populations. Spring is prime time, just after ice-out when the pike are actively feeding in the shallows preparing to spawn. Early fall can also be productive as water temperatures cool. A practical tip: focus on areas with submerged vegetation or downed timber, as pike are ambush predators. Public access can be limited, so research local parks and conservation areas beforehand. Be aware that many smaller bodies of water may be privately owned, so always obtain permission before fishing. These pike tend to be opportunistic feeders, so large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits will entice strikes. Don't be afraid to experiment with brightly colored lures, especially in stained water.
