Northern Pike

Northern pike fishing near Broadview, Illinois, can be surprisingly good in the Des Plaines River. These ambush predators thrive in the weedy backwaters and slower-moving sections of the river. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, are excellent times to target pike. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures, as are large minnows fished under a bobber. A local tip: target areas where smaller creeks or tributaries enter the Des Plaines River, as these areas often hold concentrations of baitfish and, subsequently, pike. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. The pike population consists of mostly smaller to mid-sized fish, but larger specimens are occasionally caught. Remember to handle pike carefully to avoid injury to yourself and the fish.
