Northern Pike

While not a renowned pike destination, you can find Northern Pike within a reasonable drive from Buckley, Illinois. Focus on larger bodies of water such as lakes or reservoirs that have healthy populations of panfish or other forage. Pike are ambush predators, so they'll be lurking near weed beds, drop-offs, and other structures. Spring (March-May) is a prime time to target pike as they spawn in shallow, weedy areas. Fall (September-November) is another good time, as they feed heavily before winter. A local tip is to use wire leaders, as pike have sharp teeth that can easily cut through monofilament or fluorocarbon line. Large swimbaits, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are all effective lures. Look for boat ramps on public lakes. Pike in this region might not reach trophy sizes, but a dedicated effort can produce some impressive catches.
