Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike around Carol Stream, Illinois, requires a bit of exploration, but it can be rewarding. While not known as a pike hotspot, the larger lakes and connecting waterways within the DuPage County area offer opportunities. Try fishing the deeper sections of the West Branch DuPage River or the larger lakes within the forest preserves such as Busse Woods (though a bit of a drive). Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are the best times to target these predators. Use large spoons, spinnerbaits, or crankbaits to cover water, or try suspending a dead bait under a bobber. Pike in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs and handle these toothy critters with care. Access can be tricky in some areas, so research public access points beforehand.
