Northern Pike

While not a renowned pike destination, Crestwood, Illinois, offers some limited opportunities to target northern pike in local waterways. Forest preserve lakes and ponds connected to the Des Plaines River system are your best bet. These fish aren't abundant, but they're present and can provide an exciting surprise. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are typically the most productive times. Pike will often be found near weed beds and submerged structure, ambushing prey. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective for covering water and triggering strikes. Don't be afraid to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. Be prepared for a strong fight if you hook one! Many of these locations are easily accessible from shore, making it convenient to target pike without a boat.
