Northern Pike

While Northern Pike aren't the most common species around Dana, Illinois, dedicated anglers can find them in some of the larger, weedy lakes and backwaters connected to the Illinois River. These fish prefer cooler water and abundant vegetation, so focus your efforts during the spring and fall months. Early spring, just after ice-out, is an especially productive time as pike are actively feeding after the winter. Look for areas with submerged logs, weed beds, and creek inlets. A practical tip: use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have razor-sharp teeth. Large spoons, bucktail spinners, and crankbaits are all effective lures. Also, consider using live or dead bait, such as sucker minnows, fished under a bobber. The pike population in this region is relatively small, so catch and release is encouraged to help maintain the fishery. Be prepared for some exciting strikes and hard fights when you do hook into one of these toothy predators.
