Northern Pike

Looking to tangle with Northern Pike near East Dundee? The Fox River offers some opportunities, particularly in the slower-moving sections and backwaters. Pike are ambush predators, so focus on areas with plenty of cover, such as weed beds, submerged timber, and lily pads. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and spoons are all effective lures for pike. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are prime times to target pike. They are aggressive feeders during these periods. A local tip is to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. Also, consider fishing near the mouths of creeks or tributaries that flow into the Fox River, as these areas can hold concentrations of baitfish and, consequently, pike. Public access points along the Fox River Trail provide decent access to the river. While the Fox River doesn't boast a huge population of trophy-sized pike, you can certainly find some decent fish if you know where to look and are willing to put in the time. Be prepared for a thrilling fight when you hook one!
