Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Elk Grove Village requires a bit of a drive, but the payoff can be worth it. Busse Lake, although primarily known for largemouth bass, does hold a population of northern pike. These fish can be found lurking in the weed beds and around submerged timber, ambushing unsuspecting prey. Early spring, just after ice-out, is a prime time to target them, as they are actively feeding. Another option is to head north to the Chain O'Lakes, where pike are more abundant and can reach larger sizes. A local tip: use a wire leader when targeting pike, as their sharp teeth can easily sever monofilament or fluorocarbon lines. Also, be prepared for a fight; pike are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. Busse Lake offers easy access from shore, while the Chain O'Lakes requires a boat for optimal fishing.
