Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike around Glen Ellyn requires a bit of exploration, but it can be rewarding. The best spots are the larger forest preserve lakes and connected waterways in DuPage County. These pike aren't as abundant as in more northern regions, but they're present and can reach decent sizes. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, is a great time to find them ambushing prey near weed beds. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are good choices for covering water. In the fall, focus on areas where baitfish congregate. A practical tip is to check the deeper areas of the lakes, as pike often hold there during the warmer months. The West Branch of the DuPage River, where it widens into flooded areas, can also hold pike, especially after heavy rains. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as these fish have sharp teeth.
