Northern Pike

Northern Pike can be a thrilling target in the Hampshire, Illinois area, particularly in some of the larger ponds and backwaters connected to the Kishwaukee River. While not a renowned pike destination, there are opportunities to tangle with these toothy predators. Early spring, right after ice-out, and late fall as the water cools are the best times. Pike often lurk in weedy areas and ambush prey, so focus your efforts around these structures. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lure choices. A local tip is to use a wire leader, as pike have sharp teeth that can easily cut through monofilament or fluorocarbon line. Pike in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lure presentations. Remember to handle them carefully due to their teeth.
