Northern Pike

While Lake Michigan is the dominant fishery near Highwood, Illinois, finding Northern Pike requires venturing inland to smaller lakes and forest preserve impoundments. These pike aren't giants, but they offer exciting action on light to medium tackle. Spring and early summer are prime times as pike move into shallow weedy areas to spawn and ambush prey. Look for bays with thick vegetation, creek inlets, and areas with submerged timber. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective search baits. A local tip: Try the Des Plaines River or the Skokie Lagoons. These waterways offer pike habitat, though water clarity can be variable. Pike in these smaller waters tend to be aggressive, but they can also be easily spooked. Use fluorocarbon leaders to minimize line visibility and avoid making excessive noise. Expect pike in the 2-5 pound range, with the occasional larger fish.
