Northern Pike

Johnsburg is a fantastic base for chasing northern pike, thanks to its proximity to the Chain O'Lakes. This extensive waterway provides ample habitat for pike, from weedy backwaters to deeper channels and points. Spring, right after ice-out, is arguably the best time to target pike as they move into shallow, weedy areas to spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and jerkbaits are effective for covering water and triggering strikes. As the water warms up in summer, pike often move deeper, seeking cooler temperatures and shade. Target areas with submerged vegetation, drop-offs, or near points extending into the main lake. Fall is another great time, as pike aggressively feed up before winter. A local tip: many anglers find success trolling large crankbaits or using live bait rigs along weedlines. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. Access to the Chain O'Lakes is readily available through numerous public boat ramps and marinas. The pike population in the Chain is generally healthy, with opportunities to catch fish of various sizes, including some impressive specimens.
