Northern Pike

While Northern Pike aren't the most common species near La Grange Park, Illinois, dedicated anglers can find them in the Des Plaines River. This river system provides the best local opportunity. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time for targeting pike as they move into shallower backwaters to spawn. Fall is another good time, as they feed heavily before winter. Look for pike in areas with dense vegetation, such as weed beds and lily pads, as well as near fallen trees and other submerged structure. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures for enticing strikes. A steel leader is essential, as pike have sharp teeth. One local tip: Focus on the slower-moving sections of the river, especially near creek mouths and backwater areas. Pike often lie in ambush in these locations. Be prepared for a fight, as pike are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. Remember to handle pike carefully to avoid injury to yourself and the fish – long-nosed pliers are a must for removing hooks.
