Northern Pike

For northern pike near Lake Forest, Illinois, you'll primarily target the inland lakes and sloughs connected to the Des Plaines River. While Lake Michigan holds some pike, the smaller, weedy waters offer better opportunities. Spring, just after the ice melts, and early fall are prime times when pike are actively feeding. Look for areas with submerged vegetation, fallen timber, or other structure that provides ambush points. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures, as are large minnows fished under a bobber. The Des Plaines River Canoe Launch offers access to the river and connecting backwaters. Be aware that the water levels in these areas can fluctuate, so check conditions before heading out. Pike in these waters can be aggressive, and while trophy-sized fish are rare, you can expect to find plenty of action with smaller to medium-sized pike. Using a wire leader is essential to prevent bite-offs.
