Northern Pike

Lakemoor, Illinois, offers some decent opportunities to tangle with northern pike in its freshwater lakes and waterways. The Chain O' Lakes, easily accessible from Lakemoor, is a prime location for these ambush predators. Spring and early summer, just after the spawn, are excellent times to target pike as they aggressively feed to regain energy. Fall is another productive period as they prepare for winter. Focus your efforts around weed beds, points, and submerged timber, as these areas provide cover for pike to lie in wait for prey. A steel leader is a must when pike fishing, as their sharp teeth can easily sever monofilament or fluorocarbon lines. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and jerkbaits are all effective lures. A practical tip: the Fox River, connecting the Chain O' Lakes, can also hold good numbers of pike, especially near current breaks and backwater areas. Be prepared for a fight; these fish are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs.
