Northern Pike

While perhaps not the first place that springs to mind for pike, Lily Lake in Illinois holds a decent population of northern pike. The lake's abundant vegetation, especially weed beds and lily pads, provides ideal ambush points for these predators. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall are the most productive times to target pike. They'll be actively feeding in the shallows as the water warms up or cools down. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures, but don't be afraid to throw a large swimbait or even a dead bait rig. A local tip: Pike in Lily Lake can be line shy, so using a fluorocarbon leader is recommended. Be prepared for some exciting action, as the pike here are known to be aggressive. Remember to bring your long-nosed pliers to safely remove hooks.
