Northern Pike

The North Branch of the Chicago River, winding through Lincolnwood, Illinois, offers a chance to tangle with Northern Pike. These ambush predators thrive in the weedy backwaters and slower-moving sections of the river. Spring, after the spawn, and fall, as the water cools, are peak seasons. Pike are opportunistic feeders, so larger lures like spoons, spinners, and crankbaits are effective. Don't be afraid to use a wire leader, as their teeth are razor sharp. A local hotspot is near the confluence of smaller creeks flowing into the North Branch, as these areas often hold baitfish and attract pike. Also, target areas with dense vegetation, like lily pads or submerged weeds. Public access is available along the North Branch Trail, but be prepared for some walking to find the most productive spots. The pike population in the North Branch is relatively healthy, with some fish reaching impressive sizes. Be sure to handle them carefully to avoid injury to yourself and the fish.
