Northern Pike

While not a hotbed for pike, Mokena, Illinois, does offer a few opportunities to tangle with northern pike in some of the local forest preserve lakes and larger ponds. These fish are often ambush predators, so focus on areas with thick vegetation, weed lines, and submerged timber. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, can be particularly productive as the pike are actively feeding. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are good lure choices. Don't be afraid to use a wire leader, as pike have sharp teeth. Access is generally good, with many of the lakes having established trails and fishing piers. A key to success is persistence; pike fishing can be hit-or-miss in these smaller waters, but the reward of landing one of these toothy predators is well worth the effort. Check local regulations, as some areas may have specific rules regarding pike fishing.
