Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike near Northlake, Illinois, the Des Plaines River and some of the larger forest preserve lakes offer the best opportunities. These predatory fish are ambush hunters, so focus your efforts around weed beds, submerged timber, and areas with fluctuating depths. Spring and fall are generally the most productive times to target pike, as they are more active in cooler water. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective lures. Live or dead bait, such as large shiners, can also be successful. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent pike from biting through your line. Access to the Des Plaines River is available through several forest preserve access points. Be prepared for some challenging fishing conditions, as the water can be murky at times. Pike in this area can range in size, so be prepared for a good fight.
