Northern Pike

Pike anglers visiting Pingree Grove, Illinois, will find some decent opportunities within a reasonable drive. The Chain O'Lakes, a series of interconnected lakes about an hour north, is a renowned pike destination. Closer to Pingree Grove, try exploring some of the larger retention ponds and smaller lakes in Kane County Forest Preserves; these can hold surprisingly large pike. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall are the peak seasons. Pike are ambush predators, so focus on weedy areas, drop-offs, and areas with structure. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and jerkbaits are all effective. For shore access, check out the forest preserve lakes; many have designated fishing areas and trails. If you're using a boat on the Chain O'Lakes, be mindful of the no-wake zones and heavy recreational traffic, especially during summer weekends. Local pike tend to be aggressive, so use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs.
