Northern Pike

Northern Pike fishing near Plainfield, Illinois, can be surprisingly good if you know where to look. While not as abundant as other species, pike inhabit many of the larger lakes and rivers in the area, including sections of the DuPage River and some of the larger forest preserve lakes. Spring is an excellent time to target pike, as they move into shallow weedy areas to spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures during this period. Summer can be tougher as pike retreat to deeper, cooler water. Try fishing early in the morning or late in the evening, and consider using larger live baits. Fall is another prime time, as pike become more active again before winter. One often overlooked spot is the shoreline near weed edges in the forest preserve lakes; pike often lie in ambush here. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. Check local regulations for size and creel limits, as they can vary.
