Northern Pike

While not as widely known as other species, Northern Pike can be found in the backwaters and sloughs of the Mississippi River near Quincy, Illinois. These ambush predators prefer weedy areas and submerged timber, so focus your efforts in these locations. Spring and early summer are the best times to target pike, as they are actively feeding after spawning. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures, but don't be afraid to try live bait as well. A local tip: The Sny Island Drainage District area can hold some good pike, especially in the canals and flooded fields. Be aware of the regulations regarding pike size and creel limits. While the pike population isn't massive, the chance to tangle with a toothy predator in the Mississippi's backwaters makes for an exciting fishing experience.
