Northern Pike

While Roberts, Illinois, isn't necessarily known for its pike fishing, determined anglers can find some opportunities in the larger drainage ditches and backwaters connected to the Vermilion River system. These areas often hold surprisingly large pike, especially during the cooler months. Early spring (March-April) and late fall (October-November) are the prime times to target pike, as they become more active in cooler water. Look for them near weed beds, fallen timber, and any areas where baitfish congregate. Keep in mind that pike in these smaller waters can be ambush predators, so slow-moving lures and baits often work best. A local tip is to use a steel leader, as pike have sharp teeth and can easily bite through monofilament or fluorocarbon line. Also, be prepared for some thick vegetation, as these areas can be quite weedy.
